Ah! See, there it lurks
behind that gentle, lovely smile
Beauty, in its true essence
within the deep confines
of the lonely soul -
The soul of that hard-faced man
whom the world had scorned,
rejected and despised.
The toils and travails of mundane life
had toughened him to the core,
save, that soft pool of goodness
innate within his heart.
But alas, if one could only
dare to venture beyond appearances.
The popular epithet accorded to him
was that of the "New-Age Scrooge"
What could be further away
from veracity, from reality?
And what could the fellow do except
lash out at all in defence?
A mockery of him indeed they made
till he resolved to prove his worth,
and turned into the brute
he was known to be
so he could prove how naive they were.
But back to the present, what was it
that brought back the long-lost joy
on those feared, fierce, cruel lips?
What had been that miracle key?
An unbelievable sight to behold
that of a young girl laughing
not in mocking mirth, but with genuine glee,
when he picked her in his rough, strong arms
after she fell when her crutches gave way.
The gratitude and innocence
in that bells-like chime of laughter
warmed his dead heart
and made him feel human again.
She did not flinch - that was a first -
but accepted him whole heartedly.
She too had suffered, after all -
the world had tortured her differently
Eyes met, the kindred souls rejoiced
as they finally found companionship
in their long lonely journeys.
Disfigured to the society
But beautiful to each other
Their story was, in all practicality
A fairy tale in reality.
Beauty and the Beast indeed!
This was my entry for AESTHETICA - creative writing cum painting competition held in our college on Sunday, 27th May, 2012 on the same topic - Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.
Hope you all enjoyed. Please leave your comments and opinions... :)
